Abstract: This article deals with the military-religious Order of St. Lazarus from its foundation until the fall of the last crusader stronghold in the Holy Land, Acre, under the Muslims in 1291. The Order of St. Lazarus came to be at approximately the same time as the Order of St. John, and until 1120 both orders had the same Grand Master. What characterized the knights of St. Lazarus’ was their care for the people with leprosy, and they established several leprosariums in the Holy Land. Like other military-religious orders, the Lazarians also had their military troops, but they consisted of leper knights, another characteristic of that Order. The Order’s assets and actions grew both in the Levant and Europe. Saladin’s attack on crusader states hit the Lazarians, and they had to close all of their leprosariums in time. In the middle of the 13th century, the Order shifted towards Europe and their new headquarters in Boigny. The Order of Saint Lazarus participated in the last doomed defence of Acre in 1291. The Order still exists today and is focused on charitable work.
