Abuses and Corruption in Serbia From the Rule of Prince Miloš to the Beginning of the Reign of King Aleksandar Obrenović (1815–1893)

Abstract:

The article provides an insight into the relatively unexplored field of nineteenth-century Serbian terminology concerning misuse and corruption. The word corruption was not used in the Serbian language during the first half of the nineteenth century. However, the words bribe and misuse were frequently used, as well as other terms to describe the violation of the rules by civil servants. The article is also interested in legislation about misuse and the sanctioning of misuse and corrupt behaviour in nineteenth-century Serbia.
